A Bit Of Background

Rollers have been recognized as a pigeon breed for over a century. It originated in Birmingham, England. They were imported into the United States by miners seeking to re-establish their hobby and passion in their new home. Breeding in the Unites States has been recorded as early as the 1870s.

What's A Roller Pigeon?

"The Birmingham Roller is noted for its exclusive ability to turn over backwards and rotate with inestimable speed for considerable distances", as noted by William Pensom, one of the most well known influences in the breed. These pigeons are genetically programmed to perform backflips as adults provided adequate training, diet, and exercise. The spinning can be so fast as to resemble of a ball of feathers in mid-air. In some families of rollers, the spinning ball can have a "hole" at it's center, thus earning the label of a "donut" roller.

Site Mission

This site is intended to disseminate accurate information on the breed. I have raised rollers since I was very young, living in South Central Los Angeles. I hope to influence or help along any interested people to take up this great family hobby.
